THE GARAGE

Guten Biken first officially opened its doors in March of 2010. After many evenings imagining and discussing the ultimate bike shop, it all became a reality when two good friends, Kevin White and Davo Phillips, found the perfect location in the courtyard of Herrnstr. 28. It was their good friend Stevo who discovered the unused space in the cellar at Herrnstr. 28 and from there the renovations began. The space had been used for some years and was a dark and dusty hole when they began. But with some hard work and help from friends it started looking like a bike garage...

These images were taken during the sanding of the walls. There was no wooden flooring, no electricity, no heating, no phone or internet and the walls were so moist that a layer of dust would come away when you touched them. Because the garage is in a cellar all the walls needed to be sanded and sealed before a coat of paint could be laid down. Following this Dennis came to put in the wooden floor.

With fresh paint on the walls, a new wooded floor down in one room and the first order underway Davo and Kev were ready to get things started.

Shelves were built, boxes were made and gradually things found their place. Dennis was back and built a deck for the courtyard soon to be the place were the famous Guten Biken BBQ raffle prize winners would hear their lucky numbers called.

Today Guten Biken has two entrances: one via the rear of Herrnstrasse 28, and the other at Thomas Wimmer Ring 9.
It's been a lot of hard work, but great fun all the same!

 THE NAME

The Guten Biken name

It was an old friend of Kev’s who first spoke the words “Guten Biken”. Zak, said friend, was visiting from New York for that unforgettable World Cup summer of 2006. Having a bit of German under his belt from relatives who lived in Bermerhaven when he was a kid, Zak is always keen to drop a few phrases when given the chance. One evening on the way back from the beer garden, the boys were jumping off a bridge over the canal when, between jumps, two women rode past on bikes but conspicuously ignored Zak's friendly "Guten Abend" greeting - and fair enough, they were all standing there in their boxers. Still, shocked by their rudeness, he countered with more congeniality, yelling after them, "Well, then Guten Biken!" And the rest is history. When Davo and Kev decided to open a bike shop, James, who was also there on that glorious night, said, "Guys, you HAVE to name the shop Guten Biken. There's just no other option!" The name is of course a butchering of German, but it sounds funny to most of us foreigners and tends to confuse Germans just enough to make it amusing. So there you have it, and here we are. Click here to read more about The Guten Biken Team

THE LOGO

 GB.logo.website

The logo was the genius of our head mechanic, Rossco. Trained as a photographer and coming from a graphic design background, Rossco simply combined a bit of Bavaria style and culture with our love for bikes. A Bavarian man riding a Bavarian pretzel was the result and we couldn't be happier.  In 2011 the name and logo was copyrighted and is now the proud property of Kev & Davo. To own your own Guten Biken logo on a T-shirt, Hoodie or riding cap click here for details Guten Biken Apparel
